Host:
Oli Cima, it is not easy to be a musician in our country as there are many artists which we regularly invite. Your instrument is the guitar. How did it start for you? Did you tell yourself ‘I want to be a professional”? Did it work right away or did you suffer setbacks like many other artists?

Oli Cima :
It was circumstantial. Originally, I wanted to be an actor. There was a guitar in my house which belonged to my brother. He had tried but gave it up.

Host:
Circumstances nicely played in your favor…

Oli Cima :
Yes…I first tried drama Art classes but I didn’t like it.

Host:
You probably had wrong teachers.

Oli Cima :
Maybe I should try again.

Host:
So, the album you are presenting is called Mar y Sol. How is it different from the other albums? How would you describe it?

Oli Cima :
Well, it is my first solo album, so it is in itself a big difference. Before that, I have essentially been part of group projects. I would describe it as a “world music” album. Globally, the two principal influences are flamenco and jazz.

Host:
Then, let’s listen to an extract. It will speak for itself.

[Extract]

Host:
A solo album, but you won’t be alone on stage? You are with other musicians?

Oli Cima :
Yes, absolutely. It’s a sextet which comprises the dancer Mary Y Sol Vladerama.

Host:
She gives her name to the album?

Oli Cima :
Yes, among other things. I was inspired by the life we lead together for ten years and our numerous travel in Spain.

Host:
Well, we learn just about everything in this show! It is nevertheless a beautiful title album.

Oli Cima :
Yes, it is a sort of homage because she is from Cadiz and thus I have often been in the Andalusia region. And on the album, the title “Mary y Sol” is an “allegria”, a flamenco rhythm referring to Cadiz which is a land of sun and sea. “Mary y Sol” is a contraction of these three words: Sea; and; Sun.

Host:
We are lucky to have you here in Belgium to bring us some of that sea and sun as we don’t have much of it here.

Oli Cima :
Yes, that is why I go there.

Host:
And you bring us back your inspiration. So, let us meet again with your musicians the 13 in Hannut and the 21 in Breve.
